Hudson Cares About Kids
Community First recognizes the importance of developing self-esteem and leadership K-12. The program begins in Grade 4 with academic, leadership and social skill building and culminates with high school youth becoming asset champions with the opportunity to not only become leaders but to empower and mentor younger students.
ALL SCHOOLS K-12
- Mini - grants for teachers to empower teachers to provide asset building programming in the classroom.
- Asset Teams are composed of principals, teachers and staff personnel in each building. The asset teams plan programs and incorporate assets into the everyday curriculum.
East Woods - Grades 4 & 5
- Youth 2 Youth Mentoring program – targets building self-esteem, educational skills, social skills and leadership skills. Group meets once per week after school with 20 students and 18 high school members, teacher advisor and two parent volunteers. One hour of study skill building and one hour of community service projects.
- Peer to Peer Math Tutoring – targets identified students to math assistance. Meets after school twice per week. 30 fifth grade students are paired with middle school student volunteers. A teacher advisor is on hand to oversee program.
Hudson Middle School - Grades 6-8
- Together We Will…A new program teaching the importance of community service for Grades 7 and 8. Program includes signing a Together We Will…contract committing them to community service, as well as social and personal responsibility.
- 8th grade Community First Youth Board Project Ubumi – This year they developed a petition drive for the City of Hudson to adopt an orphanage as Hudson’s orphanage in Zambia, Africa. We would like them to continue this global awareness program connecting children with other children.
- Leadership Academy – Approximately 10 at-risk students participate. Students meet with teacher advisor. Students are provided with support for academics and social issues.
Hudson High School - Grades 9-12
- Hudson Community First Youth Board – Open to all students Grades 9-12 with approximately 30 students participating. Meets monthly – Group builds assets within the high school, mentors underclassman and elementary-aged students, provides peer support for student issues and develops its own programs. Organized by the Hudson City School Prevention Specialist – Jen Chadima and advised by Principal Jay Tyree and Parent volunteer Rose Pera.
- CARE (Chemical Abuse Reduced through Education) Programming supporting efforts to raise awareness and educate parents and students about risks.
